AG offers public service opportunities to recent law school graduates

TRENTON — Acting Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced that the application period is open for the new class of the New Jersey Attorney General’s Honors Program, a two-year program that provides recent law school graduates and to newly admitted lawyers the opportunity to begin their legal careers in the public service within the Directorate of Law and Public Security.

With the program’s fourth class set to begin next month, honors program lawyers have the opportunity to help formulate legal policy and strategy, investigate cases, draft pleadings, negotiate with opposing counsel and to plead in court. Additionally, the Honors Program cohort participates in workshops and training that help develop their legal skills and introduce them to the full range of work performed by the state Attorney General’s office.

The program is open to all third-year law students, final-year students in other graduate law programs (e.g. Positions are available in Newark and Trenton.

Applicants who meet the Honors Program criteria can apply to join the program through the AG Honors website at https://www.njoag.gov/careers/ag-honors-program/. Applications are due by October 9.

The program allows participants to explore one or more of 12 thematic areas:

• Civil rights;
• reproductive health rights;
• civilian firearms enforcement and accountability;
• Review of convictions and innocence claims;
• Responsibility for social media and data privacy/cybersecurity;
• environmental justice;
• public integrity and police licensing;
• workers’ rights and labor law enforcement;
• intervention in matters of violence and defense of victims;
• youth justice;
• Policy, prevention and enforcement of sexual and domestic violence; and
• Associate Solicitor General.

Applicants must submit a writing sample, statement of interest, resume, law school transcript, and two references. Those selected for the specialized program will begin work in September 2023.
