College of Legal Practice concludes SQE training agreement with Solent Law School

Tie-up will see super-exam preparation offered as an optional LLB module

Law students at Solent University will now have the option of taking preparatory training for the Lawyers Qualifying Examination (SQE) as part of their undergraduate degrees.

This decision was made possible by a new partnership between Southampton University Law School and the College of Legal Practice (CoLP).

The deal will see CoLP, which is the UK spin-off of Australia’s largest law school, The College of Law Australia, offer an optional SQE1 preparation module for third-year law students.

The online course will be covered by student tuition fees and allow future lawyers to undertake the first part of the new centralized assessment upon graduation.

Solent law graduates will of course have to pass the second part of the SQE as well as complete a two-year qualifying professional experience before they can officially call themselves a lawyer.

CoLP CEO Dr Giles Proctor commented:

“We are delighted that Solent Law School has chosen the College of Legal Practice to provide such crucial education to its LLB students. Solent clearly recognizes the value of SQE, giving its students a chance to get ahead of the competition. Our SQE1 preparation module is ideally placed to ensure that their students can pass the SQE and begin their journey to becoming a lawyer.

A number of law schools have already announced their intention to integrate SQE preparation into their LLB offerings. Goldsmiths, University of London, has created a law degree that covers both SQE1 and SQE2 preparation, while London South Bank University (LSBU) has upheld proposals to launch a ‘career-oriented law degree. the SQE ”using multiple choice questions to test students’ knowledge in a legal practice context.

In a separate announcement, CoLP confirmed that it will offer reduced fees for its online preparation courses to students at Truman Bodden Law School in the Cayman Islands. The law of the British Overseas Territory is a combination of common law and statute, and is heavily based on English law.
